Sailing Ships and Privateers

Dear Readers,

Many of you have been asking about the third book in my HIGHLAND LAIRDS TRILOGY. I'm busy writing the story of Keir MacNeil now.  This summer I've been "awash" in research about the ships at the time of the Macdonald rebellion against King James of Scotland in 1503.

Keir MacNeil and his two brothers (both heroes in the earlier books) are privateers. The king has given them letters of marque and reprisal, which means that they can take as prizes any ships belonging to Scotland's enemies.  Keir's ship, the Black Raven, is a galleon, which is also called a privateer or man-of-war.

Keir leads the king's royal fleet into the Hebrides to quash the rebellion. Sailing with the Black Raven are his brothers' ships, the Sea Dragon and the Sea Hawk.

In my next post, I'll tell you about Raine Cameron, the heroine I've created especially for Keir (although she doesn't realize it right away.)
